Weekly Photo Challenge: A Good Match

On the coast of South Carolina and throughout the Deep South, Lowcountry houses and live oak trees make good matches.  And sometimes you don’t see one without the other.

Live oaks (so called because they are the only variety to keep their leaves all year long) extend their arms to frame the property and add a touch of Southern grace to the landscape.  And then, as if that weren’t enough, live oak branches drip with Spanish moss that gently floats with the breeze.

Ah . . . Lowcountry home and a live oak tree:  a good match.

A beautiful match! Love it. 🙂

  2. The photo and your prose are more than a “good match.” I can almost feel the breeze and smell the sweet tea waiting inside.

  3. Rusha, it’s not the true south without live oaks and Spanish moss. Like you, I love the breeze in the gently swaying moss. It has to be one of the most sensitive wind indicators on the planet. And there’s nothing quite like an oak hammock. ~James

    • Ah, hammocks! We have one at the house we rent in Pawleys, and I use it! But we bought one for our backyard in Knoxville and never took time to sit/sleep in it. We’d go out and pick up sweet gum balls littering the backyard, but never take time to relax. Not sure what that says about us, but it’s a lot! Hope your spring is on its way in KY!

The oaks and their mosses are among my favorite subjects here in South Carolina – you’ve chosen the perfect match!! Hope you enjoyed your time here – did you get up to Charleston at all? We’ve had the most amazing weather this year!

    • We’ve had great weather in Knoxville, and Hilton Head was even grander. We’re home now, though, and it’s chilly. Makes me long for SC coast even more. I want that house we saw in Bluffton — if nothing else for the porch! Best wishes for a good spring where you are.

A beautiful match inded. This house, the terrace and the tree look like they have just walked out of a movie set.

    • It’s funny you should say this. We were on tour in Beaufort, SC yesterday where the guide pointed out numerous locations for movies shot there. And some of the houses didn’t have movie footage — the actors just rented them while they were filming! It’s pretty country, all right.

Very interesting, and a really nice picture.

  8. It is such a lovely picture. I like everything about it- the tree, the front veranda and all the shades of green!

  9. Perfect. 🙂 I enjoyed lunch in Pawley’s Island yesterday. 🙂

I’ve grown to love live oaks…they are the epitome of the South to me.
