Discover Prompt 12: Light

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5

Today on Easter Sunday 2020, we’re reminded of the light of the world for those of the Christian faith. It is this light, this belief, that has sustained us for our lifetimes and will help us move from this dark period of a global pandemic into a new light that, for now, we can only imagine.

Last year, at this time, we attended Sunrise Service at our church’s Pavilion with this view of Ft. Loudon Lake in the background. This Sunday, by contrast, we celebrated Easter by streaming a video of our pastor and music minister conducting the service. Both were meaningful. But very different.

Easter mornings, however, aren’t the only times we like taking pictures. When we travel, we’re sometimes up early to catch first light bathing the landscape. The photo at the top was one of many taken right before dawn at the harbor in Castine, Maine.

In our own neighborhood, we get out early for morning walks, passing this stately old tree that faces the original house on the property where now a subdivision stands.

And we celebrate our city’s Dogwood Arts Festival as we watch snowy white blooms greet the day.

On our journeys, we’ve toured churches of various faiths, like this one in the Cotswolds, and thought of prayers offered at daybreak.

Perhaps it won’t be long now until we can move from the darkness of our present confinement to the light of day just as we did at Ait Ben Haddou in Morocco . . .

And once again face the light of our passions, no matter how modified they may be in the future.

From our house to yours, we wish you a very happy Easter filled with light and hope.
