Amy invited us to consider the impact of “negative space” on photographs this week as she rolled out the Lens-Artists Challenge #114. Since I’m traveling this week — from Knoxville to Gettysburg, Annapolis, and the Eastern Shore, I’ve found a couple of subjects that naturally lend themselves to standing out better surrounded by negative space: monuments and sailboats!
So, here’s my first post with photos published on an iPhone and one of the many quotes by Abraham Lincoln that are posted throughout the Gettysburg Museum.
And in the end, it is not the years in your life that count, it is the life in your years.

I use my phone frequently. I’ve found the quality of enlarged iPhone pics is not so great, but I rarely do that anyway. It’s so handy for quick shots, and the photos are good enough.

I like the movement and composition in the first photo. I’m imagining that the statue of General Lee has been moved to another location by now. At least I hope it has.

I, too, like that first statue — he’s in action mode, for sure. I’m not sure General Lee has been moved. That statue is quite heavy and huge! But then, I don’t know if It had another place prior to this one. Thanks for commenting. Good to hear from you.

We live in Tennessee, but we travel whenever we can. We just left this area at Gettysburg, so I was using some handy photos since I was composing with my iPhone. I love your shots because there is so much color in them! Our days were overcast which made for pleasant touring but kind of gray photos!!

Oh, the fires. I’m so devastated by what they are doing to humans and wildlife as well as land, forests, etc. so very sad.

I really like how negative space provides a powerful backdrop for photos, Rusha. Those soldiers are impressive! Enjoy Gettysburg and Annapolis. Our son went to the Naval Academy. If you haven’t been to the Park visitor Center in Gettysburg, by all means go. Peggy and I found it one of the best in the nation. –Curt

You are so right, Curt. That movie, cyclorama and museum were first class! Even I understood the maneuvers and locations of battles better, and this was a trip more fir Bert who has read all about it!
We left Annapolis today. Yesterday we took a harbor tour that went past the Naval Academy on the harbor side. So interesting. Cadets were working out everywhere.

Your iPhone did very well Rusha! Enjoy the eastern shore – hope you love those fab crabs they do up there!! We typically have a crab-night when our family reunion happens in July but sadly no reunion this year due to you-know-what.

I could do most things with my iPhone, but it was hard copying and pasting URLs. I’d get better if I practiced more!! We’re finding crab meat in many dishes and lovin’ it. Bert was at first having sticker shock at the prices of crab cakes. But he’s given in and just goes with the flow! I LOVE crab!
