Cheetah, Thornybush Game Reserve

Cheetah sighting at sundown: Thornybush Game Reserve

While on safari near Kruger National Park at sundown, we came upon a cheetah quite unexpectedly.  She was perched atop a grassy mound, seated above the top of our jeep, sensing our presence.  Our driver turned the motor off, allowing us to snap away during this quiet afternoon.  And we made not a sound, except for the click of cameras, focused on a singular animal.  Relishing every moment of our minimalist yet important find.

Beautiful. I once came across a cheetah in a tree when I was in the midst of a personal safari through East Africa in a VW bug. I had parked under a tree for shade out in the Serengeti and looked up. There it was, staring down at me. 🙂 –Curt

Wow! I’d love a personal safari in a VW bug, Curt. But only if I weren’t being chased by a rhino or lion! Don’t you just love seeing something so unexpected as a cheetah in the Serengeti? I’d do it again just for the anticipation!

Absolutely. Peggy and I are talking about doing a trip to South Africa in 2016. I would love have her have the experience of meeting rhinos, lions, elephants, cheetahs, etc. up close. Afraid it won’t be in a VW bug this time, however. Sigh. –Curt

This may not even be my best shot — I took so many! Couldn’t believe our luck at coming upon this animal and then sitting so close for several minutes. Thanks for taking a look and appreciating the moment as we did!

We are going to South Africa for Christmas. Not expecting to see cheetahs, thought. Fantastic picture!

If you go on safari, you may see a cheetah. But there’s so much to see in South Africa unrelated to safaris and wild animals. It is truly a phenomenal spot in the world. Get ready for a great trip!!

Every time I see a shot like this I want to return to (South) Africa. These sightings are truly special and until we have experienced one of these sightings we cannot appreciate the beauty of it. Great photo.

Thanks so much. It truly was an unusual happenstance — one that surprised our driver, too. We just sat there, not even believing what we were seeing. Thanks for appreciating this vision with us!

Thanks for looking. That whole event is quite memorable for us. Just the quiet and the cheetah. We couldn’t pinch ourselves enough to say, “We really are here”!

We loved the reserve we were on — Thornybush. Would love to return and see more, especially Kruger. Thanks for reading/commenting.

Thanks for keeping up with us! It was a great day on safari when we came upon that cheetah. I could hear my heart thumping!

It makes our day to hear from you.
