Immediately upon seeing the challenge word that Ailsa of Where’s My Backpack selected for this week’s Travel Theme — Tangle — we thought of one of the first sights we saw in Nepal. In 2011, when we journeyed with our group to that country to build houses for Habitat International, we stayed in the Thamel District in Kathmandu. Naturally, we wanted to do some shopping in that teeming, crowded, exciting district.

Tangled wires in the Thamel District of Kathmandu, 2011

But we were unprepared for what we saw tangled around poles on every street corner: wads and wads of wiring! No wonder blackouts were common even then.

And there’s no telling what this scene is like today after the April 2015 earthquake. Even more tangled, probably — and in more ways than one.

To get even more tangled up, click here to view all the postings for this week’s Travel theme: Tangle.

Filed under: Nepal, Travel Theme Tagged: Kathmandu, Nepal, tangled, Thamel District, Travel theme: tangle, wiring

Many thanks to so many of you who left comments on Facebook or our blog as you voted for your favorite blue picture for our entry into the Capture the Colour 2013 Photo Challenge. (If you would like to take a look at our blue photos and vote, click here.)

To fill you in on what we’re doing:

We were nominated for the Capture the Colour 2013 challenge sponsored by TravelSupermarket.com by Terri and James Vance of Gallivance. (To see their entry, click here.) Each day we will post three photos, one for each of the five colors required by the challenge (blue, yellow, green, red, and white) and ask that you vote for your favorite. Then, at the end of the week, we’ll select the top five for submission. Thanks, in advance, for reading and commenting. We appreciate you!

Here are our three entries for YELLOW today:

1. Sunflowers in the Cooler

At Billy Heroman’s flower shop in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, you can walk right into the cooler and select a bouquet to your liking. We loved the fresh colors in this assemblage of yellow sunflowers, but before we said Wrap ’em up, we snapped this picture of nature’s sunniest offerings for the day.

2. The Boudhanath Stupa

At Boudhanath in Kathmandu, Nepal, the eyes of Buddha stare down at you from this ancient Stupa, one of the largest in the world and situated on what was once a major trade route between Nepal and Tibet. This picture (taken from a second floor office of a medical practitioner who prescribed a concoction of herbs to relieve a fellow traveler’s sinus problems!!) features one of four sets of eyes facing north, south, east, and west on a golden yellow face.

3. Sunrise at Pawleys

Taken from the widow’s walk atop our beach rental in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, this photo reveals the warm yellow rays of morning sun against the silhouettes of other rooftops around us. What a great way to start a morning . . . facing the Atlantic!

Please vote for your favorite YELLOW picture by commenting or posting on Facebook. Your vote is oh, so helpful!

Thanks,

Rusha and Bert Sams

Sue Llewellyn who writes an outstanding photography blog “A Word in Your Ear” has a Word a Week Challenge that you can access here: http://suellewellyn2011.wordpress.com

Each week, in response to the post, bloggers find some of their best representations for the selected word. Although I’m not a great photographer, I love capturing people and places wherever I travel.

This week, I couldn’t resist joining the posts with pictures of people I saw in Nepal when my husband and I worked through Habitat for Humanity to build two stone and mud homes near Kathmandu.

We visited a school in Tinpiple, and these two girls watched us from the door of their classroom. Dressed in work clothes and heavy boots, we must have been quite a sight to see!

These two children watched us as we boarded the bus. One wide-eyed little girl stole my heart with her fascination for who we were and what we were doing, but her companion wasn’t nearly as thrilled at the idea of posing for a picture!

A mother and her four daughters served us lunch each day at their restaurant. Their faces were always a welcome sight because we got a glimpse into their family and how they worked together to serve us broiled chicken, cooked rice, and hot tea.

This man, the head stonecutter for the house we built, examined many rocks before finding the exact one he needed for the cornerstones. If he didn’t find the right one, he painstakingly cut a rock to fit. Although we spoke different languages, our face-to-face contact helped us forge a bond across the cultural divide.

There were so many children that I could have scooped up and taken home. With huge brown eyes and a winsome smile, this little girl was one we photographed over and over.

At the dedication of the house we built, the homeowners’ daughter came dressed for the occasion. Her face — full of hope and happiness — made the whole trip worthwhile!
