If you’re lucky enough to be in downtown Spokane, Washington, (to paraphrase an old saying), then you’re lucky enough. And indeed you are. Because if you have kids in tow, there’s more than enough to see and do — all in Riverfront Park downtown.

1. Slide down the Red Wagon.

Who wouldn’t want to climb this 27-foot tall Radio Flyer and slide down the handle? Kids love it, but some grown-ups have been known to take the challenge, too! Designed by Ken Spiering, this Radio Flyer wagon is nine times the size of the original little one you may have owned as a kid — and way more fun.

<img width="200" height="133" src="http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/img_1620.jpg?w=200&h=133" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Sliding down the Red Wagon" data-attachment-id="4758" data-orig-file="http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/img_1620.jpg" data-orig-size="5184,3456" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.6","credit":"","camera":"Canon EOS REBEL SL1","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1400962392","copyright":"","focal_length":"55","iso":"125","shutter_speed":"0.0125","title":""}" data-image-title="Sliding down the Red Wagon" data-image-description="<p>Sliding down the Red Wagon</p>

 2. Feed the ducks.

When you’ve had enough of the Red Wagon, go to water’s edge to feed the ducks. Don’t be surprised if they come “atcha” all at once. Ducks love food from kids and adults , and some of us love “honkin” back at those quackers! Be sure to take a look at the sculpture across the way and admire the bridge. It’s just part of the prettiness of Riverfront Park.

3. Ride the Looff Carousel.

In operation since 1909, the Looff Carousel has offered adults and kids the opportunity to ride colorfully painted horses, fierce tigers, and proud lions (oh, my), while a recording of the original Ruth & Sohn Band Organ plays in the background. If you’re a teen or adult with long arms, try reaching out to grab the gold ring as you go by. And maybe you’ll win a prize for that little one who wanted to ride this thing in the first place!

<img width="133" height="200" src="http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/img_1653.jpg?w=133&h=200" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Grabbing ring -- Looff Carousel" data-attachment-id="4760" data-orig-file="http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/img_1653.jpg" data-orig-size="3456,5184" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4","credit":"","camera":"Canon EOS REBEL SL1","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1400963439","copyright":"","focal_length":"24","iso":"500","shutter_speed":"0.025","title":""}" data-image-title="Grabbing ring — Looff Carousel" data-image-description="<p>Grabbing ring — Looff Carousel</p>

<img width="200" height="133" src="http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/img_1659.jpg?w=200&h=133" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Looff Carousel" data-attachment-id="4761" data-orig-file="http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/img_1659.jpg" data-orig-size="5184,3456" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4","credit":"","camera":"Canon EOS REBEL SL1","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1400963460","copyright":"","focal_length":"20","iso":"400","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":""}" data-image-title="Looff Carousel" data-image-description="<p>Looff Carousel</p>

4. Take pictures in City Hall Plaza

OK. So your kid looks great today. Having fun. Happy and contented after a ride on the Carousel. So what could be a better time than now to snap pics on the steps of City Hall Plaza? Nice background, pretty flowers, lovely setting — don’t you agree?

5. Stare at the falls. (Or be daring — ride a gondola!)

Keep walking down the steps to Huntington Park where staring at the falls is all you’ll want to do. Get close but not too close that the spray messes with your camera lens. If you’ve got audio to put with your video, turn it on. You don’t want to miss the roar of the falls and the joy of being right there with the action. Or, if you dare, take a Gondola Ride lasting about 15 minutes for only seven bucks or so. It’s a thrill your kids will write about in their back-to-school essay, “What I Did Last Summer” — for real!!

6. Act like a kid in The Joy of Running Together

If you come back up through City Hall Plaza and look right, you just might see The Joy of Running Together, a sculpture of 40 life-size runners by David Govedare commemorating the annual Spokane Bloomsday Run. (Click here for a previous post.) And if you look closely, you’ll see a kid or two lining up among the runners in imitation of their swing-arm, foot-raising action. Oh, wait a minute. Is that an adult doing that, too? Wait another minute. I want in.

An adult mimics the form of The Joy of Running Together

7. Get wet in the Riverfront Park Rotary Fountain!

If you’ve waited this long to get wet, you may have waited too long. No matter how hard you try to resist, you just may have to let your kids go. Didn’t bring a towel you say? Well, save this treat for last and just let ‘em run dripping to the car. Kids of all ages love toe-dipping, arm-waving, and full-fledged, body-soaking action in the Rotary Fountain!

Green Bluff, about 15 miles north of Spokane, Washington, was fairly quiet on Memorial Day weekend. Blooms on the Bluff — a festival celebrating fruit tree bloom in this area of growers — had ended just a couple of weeks before, and the Strawberry Festival wouldn’t arrive until June 28th.

A John Deere tractor waits for a run in Green Bluff, Washington

Green Bluff‘s roads loop around apple orchards and farms offering spectacular views of the fresh greens of spring and glorious cloud-dotted sky. But you can also see the metal that makes it all run smoothly in the form of tractors, wagons, plows and so forth.

Even old farm implements whose productive farm time has ended are pressed into service as holders of colorful spring annuals.

Old farm implement planted with flowers

And at stop #6 — Harvest House & Orchard — several metal snare drums hold mixed arrangements ready to greet summer visitors.

Blue metal snare drum repurposed as flower pot at Harvest House

Our favorite metal, though, just might be this doughnut machine that Todd, the owner of Harvest House, cranked up just for us early-morning seekers of something sweet to go with our coffee. That little metal machine spit out fresh, hot doughnuts ready for the the cinnamon sugar cycle and our welcoming hands!

Right below City Hall Plaza at the upper levels of Huntington Park in downtown Spokane, Washington, lies a set of old gears and some twisted cable just perfect for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Twist. The display is for all to see — a piece of history to remind us of how it all got started in harnessing the water flow through Spokane. Although I know little about how cable is constructed, it involves a lot of twisting of strong metal wires and other components, or at least that what it looks like to me. In many ways, it’s an engineering feat on which lives depend, so a display of some of the first twisted cable makes sense for all of us who want to know what the parts of the whole look like.

New cable supporting the Spokane Falls Skyride is probably better constructed with stronger, more durable twisted wire, insulation, and sturdy sheathing. Let’s hope so. After all, that’s the last thing you want to worry about while enjoying an exhilarating ride across the falls!

Just about any good diner
serves a bountiful breakfast, but mostly the tried-and-true menu
items look and taste the same wherever you go: scrambled eggs
are scrambled, pancakes are light and fluffy, and toast comes with
butter and jam. So when we try a new place, we hunt for
unique breakfast stand-outs as we scan the menu or gaze at other
customers’ orders before we tell the waiter what we want. It didn’t take long to
figure it out at Frank’s
Diner, located in a turn-of-the-century
presidential railway car in Spokane, Washington. Almost as
soon as we were seated at the counter where we had a front-row
position for the cooking action, we struck up a conversation with
the customer next to us — a chef from Seattle getting ready to
open his own restaurant. He was in Spokane to pick up some
custom-made sinks, but said he never misses a chance to eat at
Frank’s. We asked him what he was ordering.
Every time I come here, I think
I’ll order something else, but I get the same thing: Corned
Beef Hash and Eggs with the big side of hashbrowns, he
confessed. Sure ‘nough. About that time, the cook poured out
a stack of hashbrowns, flattening the pile with a turner.
(Sorry about the blurred picture, but it’s a candid of this
constant-motion cook moving from flipping omelettes to spreading
out the taters!)
<img class="size-medium wp-image-2986" alt="A cook at Frank's spreads

out a mound of hashbrowns on the griddle.” src=”http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/img_1287.jpg?w=375″ width=”375″ height=”500″ /> A cook at Frank’s spreads
out a mound of hashbrowns on the griddle.

Right about
then, the waiter brought out the order for the chef seated next to
us: two cooked-to-perfection eggs atop a mound of corned beef hash
with almost a foot-long stack of golden hashbrowns snugged right
beside!
<img class="size-medium wp-image-2985" alt="Corned Beef Hash and Eggs,

Frank’s Diner” src=”http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/img_1297.jpg?w=500″ width=”500″ height=”375″ /> Corned Beef Hash and Eggs,
Frank’s Diner

I was pretty sure I wanted what the chef
was eating, but still felt compelled to check out the menu with an
eye toward what was unusual or unique at Frank’s. It wasn’t
hard to find. I even liked the name of
it: Gourmet Purple Oatmeal –
Snoqualmie Falls Oatmeal with huckleberries served with toast,
raisins, brown sugar, butter or milk. Tempting. But I decided
to duplicate the chef’s order, and husband Bert decided on a cheese
and bacon omelette. Both came with those toasty, hot hashbrowns!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-2987" alt="Meat & Cheese

Omelette with a side of hashbrowns” src=”http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/img_1296.jpg?w=500″ width=”500″ height=”375″ /> Meat & Cheese
Omelette with a side of hashbrowns

While waiting for our
orders, we took a look around. The place has back-in-time ambiance.
To our left was a long counter where customers sipped good
strong coffee and watched as two quick-action cooks fired out
orders with an enviable rhythm known only to folks who work
together well.
<img class="size-medium wp-image-2988" alt="Eating at the counter at

Frank’s gives you a front row seat for the cooking frenzy.” src=”http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/img_1284.jpg?w=375″ width=”375″ height=”500″ /> Eating at the counter at
Frank’s gives you a front row seat for the cooking
eager diners and waitresses pacing up and down the classy
checkerboard floors.
<img class="size-medium wp-image-2989" alt="A waitress takes breakfast

orders at Frank’s.” src=”http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/img_1298.jpg?w=375″ width=”375″ height=”500″ /> A waitress takes breakfast
orders at Frank’s.

Two chatty, non-stop servers kept our
coffee mugs full and then handed over our
big-enough-for-two-but-we’re-not-sharing breakfasts with a smile!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-2991" alt="Friendly, organized

waitresses never missed a beat.” src=”http://ohtheplaceswesee.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/img_1288.jpg?w=375″ width=”375″ height=”500″ /> Friendly, organized
sat. We ordered and watched. Then we dined in style!
And if we ever come back, we just might try some of these other
interesting-sounding favorites:
Great Nana’s Meatloaf
Benedict, Hobo
Scramble, Grilled Banana Nut
Bread, or Frank’s Special French
Toast. But for now, I’m just tweeting what made us
sit up and take notice:

Great #hashbrowns at
