Dogwoods — whether creamy white or delicate pink — have four petals (called bracts) attached to a greenish-yellow floret in the center. In full bloom, dogwood trees seem snowy or lacy, as the branches make a showy stand or move gently in the wind, adding unexpected color to the landscape.

In addition to these centrally focused flowers, the town of Knoxville, Tennesee celebrates dogwood blooms as the central motif and focus of the Dogwood Art Festival. It’s an annual celebration of spring, the profusion of arts in the area, and outdoor activities enjoyed by all. People from around the world travel to Knoxville for the celebrations. But those of us who live here take nothing for granted: the arrival of both the dogwoods and the festival have become the center of something beautiful and enjoyable each and every spring.
